I have a confession to make. I wear lycra (as in gym gear designed for getting sweaty in) a whole lot more often than I actually work out and get sweaty. I wear gym gear every day, and truth be told I’m not even ashamed. The same few pairs of cropped leggings are on constant rotation through the wash and generally don’t even make it into the drawer before I’m donning the next pair again. Why the obsession? I’ve been wondering the same, and have managed to come up with the following reasons:
1. It’s COMFORTABLE. Lycra/spandex/whatever your stretchy-fabric-of-choice, the key is that it STRETCHES… a LOT. What’s not to love about that? If I could buy corporate-acceptable work pants made of lycra I totally would (although I hazard a guess they might look slightly like those pleated tracksuit pants your grandma used to wear). But back to the point – there is almost nothing more comfortable than a pair of great fitting leggings, tank top, sports bra and sweater. Even at the end of the day I will change out of work clothes into this gear rather than the 10 year old, favourite trackie pants others may choose to curl up on the couch in.
2. Thanks to the likes of Lorna Jane and Lululemon, gym clothes are fashionably acceptable to wear just about ANYWHERE these days. Back to point 1, I’m as comfortable in my gym gear as many others are in their fave trackies. But how many people do you see at brunch in the trackie-daks that should never be seen anywhere but the couch? None, zero, zilch. Leggings, runners and a tshirt or sweater? Oh, different story! It is totally acceptable now to wear your gym clothes to coffee with girlfriends, to do the shopping, pick up the kids from childcare/kinder/school, the park, the list goes on! Thanks LJ and LL … you may not be the reason I dress like this, but you sure have helped me feel good getting away with it!
3. OPPORTUNISTIC exercise. There’s no other style of outfit that says ‘I’m ready to go right now’ than your workout kit. I can’t think of a better way to dress that would allow me to take advantage of snippets of time to sneak in a bit of exercise. I would LOVE to be the person who springs out of bed at 5:30am and gets a full workout in before the rest of the house wakes. I’m just not (well at least, not yet). I do love getting out for a walk on my days at home though, and during the days, weeks and months with a new baby, being dressed and ready to go as soon as the feeding/sleeping/nappy changing stars aligned was my best chance at getting out of the house. Now that baby is a toddler and he thinks a few squat jumps while his dinner is heating up are absolutely hilarious. Pushups on the edge of the bathtub are also pretty funny, naturally. But most of all I just love getting out into the sunshine with him, the pram and the dog. Long walks, plays in the park, or a stop at our fave coffee spot. My preferred choice of attire means I’m always ready to go.
There you have it, the best reasons I could come up with to justify my slight obsession with wearing gym gear. If you’re a fellow obsessor, please help me feel normal and let me know why you love it so much too!!
